To Be Brave

His words are whips
Like the way my father would say my name when he came home after a long day
And his hands bound me up like chains
My father told me that belts were the way of showing his love to me
He used to be different
"Baby, I love you."
My mom whispered me those four words after he’d leave my room. She told me she’d never let it happen again.
I don't remember how this started
Me letting go of the control in my life
It was more of a gradual change
He tells me he loves me as his hand meets my face
SMACK
"You're beautiful."
My father would breathe in my ear as his hands slid down my pants. “This is normal. Me showing my love to you.”
Another blow to the cheek
I can smell the liquor on his lips
Oh how I miss his tender kiss

His words are whips
And his hands bound me up like chains
"You won't do anything."
I’d lay helpless in the shower for hours, hoping i could was off the shame of letting him get to me
He always told me he did this to help my self esteem
But why is he acting this way?

His words are whips
And his hands bound me up like chains
Some days the old him comes around
But he only stays for a few days
Then his alter comes out to play
Oh here comes the real pain, I think
"You're lucky I'm with you, no one else would love you."
Come on, you know only your mother and I would ever appreciate you for who you are
He doesn't let me talk back, says I should stay in my place
"Women are good at cooking, it comes naturally, but they need to learn how to treat their man."
Ever since a young age, I’ve locked in the room when i wasn’t being used some days

His words are whips
And his hands bound me up like chains
"Come on, slut, tell me who I am."
no.
I don't answer
"I'm talking to you."
I stand up
"Be careful there."
I don't listen
My hands are fists
But my face is calm

His words are whips
And his hands bound me up like chains
Walking to the door, without looking back
I make my last decision
But before my foot left the ground
A bullet entered and escaped my mind

His words were whips
And his hands bound me up like chains
