To Be A Girl

What does it mean to be a girl?

Does it mean spending hours

Covering your face

With layers upon layers of make-up?

Do you mask your face with concealer

To hide the blemishes

Only you can see?

Do you coat your eyelashes with mascara

To see them long and dark

As if they weren’t before?

Do you paint your lips with lipstick

To make them seem full

Even though they already are?

Does it mean you spend all night

To pick out the perfect outfit

Only to change your mind the next day?

Do you wear short skirts

To make your butt more noticeable

To make the boys see you as easy?

Do you wear tight shirts

To make your chest seem bigger

And your stomach look smaller?

Do you wear high heels

So that your legs seem longer,

Than the Golden Gate bridge?

Does it mean you only eat once a day

Only to throw it up later

To make yourself feel less guilty?

Do you only drink water,

To get your waist smaller,

Than a size zero?

Do you only eat fat-free foods,

To get rid of the tummy

That you think is bigger than it really is?

Do you brush your teeth,

After every session in the bathroom,

To get rid of the poison in your system?

Does it mean you lose yourself

to Mr. Popular

Only to have him dump you the next day?

Do you cater to his every need,

To every whim,

As if you were his slave?

Do you smile politely to his friends,

When they insult you,

Because if you don’t he might leave you?

No.

Don’t do that for them.

You are perfect the way you are.

You are beautiful without the cement on your face.

Without the tornado causing eyelashes.

You should wear make-up for you.

You can wear sweatpants to school.

You can wear baggy shirt on a date.

You should love how you look,

How you wear your style.

You can eat the whole box of cookies,

That you have wanted to eat,

Since day one.

You deserve it.

You can find the perfect person,

That doesn’t force you.

They will love you,

For who you are.

You can be you.

You may be emo,

But you can love pink and Taylor Swift,

While obsessing over

Pop boy bands.

You can be you.

You may be punk,

But you can love girly things

Like frilly dresses

And fantasies of Prince Charming.

You can be you.

You may be a girly girl,

But you can love to play sports,

Like football

And rugby.

You can be you.

You should be able

To like what you like.

You should be able

To break the stereotypes.

You should be able

To be yourself in all ways possible.

That’s what it should be,

What it should mean to be a girl.
