To Be My Mother

you

how to be so selfless i haven’t got a clue

to surrender your freedom

and still have the will to hum

i don’t know how i could ever be you

you’re not afraid of judgement or closed eyes

how do you tell yourself to be okay?

how does one completely accept the day?

to be satisfied with half-smiles and sighs?

it isn’t simple to do what you do

a constant battle that you never let us know you’re fighting

to never focus on winter, but always focus on spring

i don’t know how i could ever be you

somehow you prevail through it all

your feet get heavy and eyes shut

there’s tears, but there’s also always a but

you always rise even though you fall and fall

you always tell me “don’t let the world be a blur”

to seek validation not from others, but from my own mind

to never forget what i’m leaving behind

but not be afraid of the future

me

watch me go on my way

watch me never quit

listen to me go on and on about it

till there’s nothing left to say

i’ll take you with me

wherever i go

because rain, sleet, or snow

you’ll always be my home

you always say how you wish you were more of me

why you wouldn’t want to be you,

i haven’t got a clue

you’re perfect as far as i can see

you say i will bore wonders

you could never be as kind

who can have thoughts as pure as mine?

how do i keep on smiling even though it thunders?

i know to do amazing things because of what you’ve said

i know how to be so kind because of how you act

i know how to gain what i lack

all because of words you’ve whispered in my head

you’re the reason i always try

for you are the teeth in my smile

the why to my question of running the extra mile

without you i wouldn’t fly
