be prepared for heartbreak

at first

i wanted to tell you

he's bound to break your heart, love

you don't even know if he likes you

you like him, but if the feelings aren't reciprocated,

your feelings could get crushed

thus, he'd break your heart

but that's a little cynical of me

too mean-spirited

instead, dear, i want to tell you

be prepared for heartbreak

you are deserving of the most magnificent love in the world

and you know this

so your guard is up

against any boy who claims to be a man

and wants to sit next to you

admire you

and all your beautiful curves

against any boy who wants to be your superman

and wants to listen to your sorrows

comfort you

and make you happy

but your heart has been locked up for almost two decades now

when will you learn to let love in

to let someone be there for you

to let yourself trust someone

you fear falling in love

because if you do,

you could get married

and if you end up a wife,

you could end up

with an abusive husband

you've seen too much of that

you don't want to handle a divorce

or a marriage whose love has expired a long time ago

so what's the easiest way to avoid that?

stay single all your life

who needs a man anyway

when you can take care of yourself?

but you know it feels nice

when a guy listens to you

texts you

walks with you

opens doors for you

buys you drinks and food

talks to you

shares his life with you

you feel special

wanted

cared for

but you never let it get too far

you haven't let any guy be your boyfriend

because you're not at a point in your life

where you're ready for one

you have so many issues you want to work through

and you don't want to be an emotional burden

on some guy

so you work on yourself

and you still talk to guys

but you just make it clear that you're friends

or you're in the gray with them

but nothing's happened between you two

and that's where you usually stop

don't let anything happen

because if you do,

you know you'll open yourself up to heartbreak

and you're hurting enough as it is

but love,

if he is genuine,

if he wants to help you,

if he says to let him know when you need something,

maybe you need to give him the key to your heart

allow him to be there for you

i know you're independent

i know you can handle yourself

but just know it could be nice

to keep him in your life

but of course,

be prepared for heartbreak
