Beacon of Light

To you, the world does no harm.

Evil is only heard in the fairytales of dreams,

darkness is only seen when time for sleep

and pain is only felt with falls off the bike and the scraping of knees.

You only know of the happiness that comes with everyday,

the love that is felt through mommy's hugs and kisses eachday

and the glee of not having a care in the world that comes with youth.

You swim through a sea of hope; All you know is good and like a beacon, it shines through you.

To me, the world does harm.

Evil is seen everyday in the cruelty of humanity,

darkeness is seen everywhere amongst the langugae of profanity,

and pain is felt always with the intentional words and actions meant to cut oh so deep

I only know of the sadness that comes with each sunrise,

the hatred that is felt through the violence against my innocent brothers and sisters for the color of their skin each moonshine,

and the hopelessness that comes with feeling the suffering of the world  after years of living truly not free.

I drown in a sea of disparity. All I know is bad and yet I see a beacon of light through your eyes, shimmering and shining oh so bright for me.

In your glimmering eyes, I see hope.

Hope for a better future where we feel love for all,

where the color of our skin doesn't get us thrown against a wall,

and the songs we hear aren't the cries of pain and hoplessness of others, but of the melodies of joy and dreams of others.

To my little one, you a radiate a bright light of hope and love through your oh so beautiful smile and call,

a shining beacon of light amidst the darkness of the world, and you my little one will gleam for all.
