The Beast

Mother told me to not go outside the window

Tales of a beast creeping along the sill

But mother's gone, she died a widow

And nothing moves, all is still

December passes, boring and dreary

I wonder if beasts get cold

Sounds come and I get wary

Three years have passed, I wonder if he is old

The tales are no longer fresh in my mind

I once saw his eyes, blue and clear

But then he turns back behind

So I wait another year

When I see him I'm brushing my hair

He crawls through the open glass

My feet are cold and also bare

He brings me a blade of grass

Months pass and we are friends

He tells me tales of outside

He says he couldn't leave to no end

As we listen to the ocean's tide

And when he tells me I've been caged

He's sorry that he's been lost in the East

My mind spins and I become enraged

I wonder who truly is the beast?

And when I'm free

It's Autumn fall

And now I see

Mother was the beast after all
