The Beat Carries On
My school is a lucky one; our beat carries on
But others aren't so fortunate, for their melodies are gone
All the unused music sheets that were shipped away
And instruments in closets gathering dust as they lay.
What happened to all the brass and their sounds so rich?
Where is the piano and its always perfect pitch?
Where's the timpani with its resonance and tone?
Where's the flutes, the clarinets, and saxophones?
They're condemned for life in the dark rooms where they're laid.
It's all because someone refuses to get paid.
The directors, they're out there, hundreds abound
But as time passes fewer openings are around.
What's the solution? Does anyone consider this?
It seems every music program cut is not even missed!
So instead of rich melodies filling the school hall
They echo of emptiness and no one cares at all!
The football teams will miss their biggest fans!
(We're half the reason people ever filled the stands!)
Spring concerts: they're something to get excited about!
But no! The men in charge thought we'd be better without!
But we're not! Music in our schools will never die!
As much as I ponder this, I can never understand why
So many schools declare that music is gone.
But one thing's for sure: our beat carries on.
