A Beating Heart

A Beating Heart

Naeha Inapanuri

last week my life was steady

constant

the same routine

repeating

never ceasing

but I was a fool to think it would last

my life beat like a heart

this continuous rhythm

thump-thump, thump-thump it went

I never stopped to think of how some hearts fail

not all hearts are perfect

hearts stop, then continue

they have irregular beats

some are misshapen

others can’t function without the help of machines

I’m not saying my life was a perfect heart

with no faults whatsoever

but last week

it was a beating heart

sometimes that’s all you want

a beating heart.

because a heart that beats,

is better than one that doesn’t beat at all.
