A Beautiful Fool!

Sit down and listen my mother explains

Be sweet, be pretty, and always refrain

From thinking too much

And speaking your mind

That is not the role you’ve been assigned

Don’t oppose, rebel, or try to deny

This war will not end with the Treaty of Versailles

Please be quiet, smile, and do not plead

This is the only way you will ever succeed

Do be courteous and put water in the kettle

Darling, this is a life where you will have to settle

I rocked you to sleep in that frail carriage

But now you will be sold to the captive hands of marriage

This is not what I want, nor what I dreamed

This is what we have, no matter how obscene

Submit to every command as I have advised

Honey, don’t let tears ever run from your eyes

So continue to nod and blindly obey

And do not resist until your bones start to decay
