Because
Because I need a way to juxtapose critical thoughts and creativity
Because some things don’t make sense
But when I paint pictures with words
Sense is irrelevant
Sense is insignificant
Sense purely exists and I can find it
But only if I choose
Because words shouldn’t have to rhyme to have melody
Because words laced together are a yin-yang harmony
Because my voice has more power when it’s seen not heard
Because trees can be blue and pigs can fly
And because here, in this realm, that’s just fine
Because any object can represent anything
Because words are the key to unlock layers of me
Every person is like an onion
So maybe what unlocks a layer of me
Can unlock a layer of someone else
Because locks may be as universal as the thirst for knowledge
The thirst for explanation
The thirst for self-expression
Because words are caterpillars until you use them
Use turns words into butterflies
The more colorful the butterfly
The stronger the word
Words erupt from me
Creating effervescent butterflies with vibrant patterns
Because this is how I unravel tangled twine
Because this jigsaw puzzle is made from confused corners of my mind
Because love and hate are one and the same
Because when I can’t write words like this
My thoughts explode
The supernova dies
And what would be
Will never be
If I don’t write
Because this is how I think
Because I need to express myself as much as I need to breathe
Because my mind is the twitter of a hummingbird’s wings
Because I run on super speed
Because I love language
Because writing it all out
Rhymes and slant rhymes
Whimsical notions
Captured youth
All sort me out
Because I need to sort things out obsessively
Because order can be unordered
Because I can be ordered
Because I love words when they’re caterpillars
I crave being the catalyst for their transition
Because words fill me to the brim
Chock full of wonder
Chock full of descriptions
Brimming and busting with explanations
Bursting like a balloon
I need a needle to pierce making an outlet for the hot air words
Forming bits and pieces of stanzas in my head
Because I needed a way to find myself
And I found a way that made sense of even teenage angst and clichéd emotions
Because emotions are powerful when someone can feel them through another’s words
Because I never had the guts to be the kid who colored the sky gold
That’s why I need poetry
