Because I Could Not Stop For Breath

Because I could not stop for breath, Air kindly made me breathe- The atmosphere held just ourselves, And destructivity. I slowly ran, I knew no pace And I had stowed away My saneness and my neatness too, For cleaner days ahead- We passed the dump, where landfills grow At noontimes, in the spring- We passed the spills of oil gunk- We passed the dying bees- Or rather- they passed me. The winter grew warm and warmer- For only a sweater around- My head wear- only tulle I stopped before a land that seemed- A hint of Nature’s vow. The earth was slowly diminished, The dirt was hardly ploughed. Since then- ‘tis months and years - and yet Feel warmer day by day I first surmised our future’s death, Were from global warming’s seed. (This poem was inspired by Emily Dickinson's "Because I Could Not Stop For Death")
