Because I Learned...

Because you said you loved me,

I stayed with you

And said I loved you too.

Because I said I loved you too,

You thought there wasn’t a thing

That I wouldn’t do for you.

Because you thought I loved you,

You thought I would stay

Even after taking everything away,

So that you were all I had

Because I thought I loved you,

I tore myself to shreds

Over everything you did;

Over every word you said.

But the only you I loved

Was the person I thought you could become,

But trying to change and love you,

Only made my heart go numb.

And the only piece of me you loved

Was the part that you could control

But because I’ve grown to love myself,

I’ve learned to let you go.
