BECAUSE I LOVE YOU

Love is not the saccharine half-truths that drip from your lips
or the ravenous hunger in your eyes that feasts upon what remains of my hollow shell
I’ll feed you, you’ll empty me out, and I’ll fill you up again—an endless cycle of controlled chaos
But I am not your sexual vending machine,
ready at all hours with the push of a button

Because you love me, you won’t wear those shorts outside, you push
Because I love you, I’ll buy you that necklace you’ve been eyeing for months
I’ll show you what happens when you disobey me
because, I love you

And I obey like a muted dog
chained to her owner
Brought to my knees by three words and a smile

Because I loved you I will love myself
And reach for your hands wrapped around my neck
Allow myself to finally breathe
Because love is open hands, not closed fists raised in righteous indignation

Because I loved you I will find someone who appreciates me and my eccentricities
Someone who can bear my inevitable shortcomings
He will hold me when I need to be held
He will trust me, and respect my privacy and the boundaries I've set
He will support me in my endeavors and I in his
Because he loves me, he will compliment me for my witty banter instead of solely on my figure
Because he loves me, he will notice the way my eyes change color depending on what I wear
Because he loves me, he will cherish me wholly
Not just a few square inches

It’ll be a real, candid love.
And it’ll be ours.
