Because I Love You
Because I loved him
I thought I didn’t deserve
I thought I needed to work
I thought I needed to serve
But I didn’t know what love is
I thought it had a price
I thought it was a contract
A balancing of the scales
And what I had could never be enough
I thought I loved him
I didn’t know love at all
I thought he loved me
He wanted me
Called me his
He said he could give me everything
He hurt me
Made me feel small
Made me feel weak
Made me not me
But because you love me
I began to see
That my identity is not
In what I have to offer someone else
That you decided to love me
Knowing the highs and the lows
And you don’t ask for more than what I can give
And you love on me lavishly
And you cherish me as a part of you
And I cherish you as a part of me
Because you love me
I learned how to love
And I learned how to love
Because I love you
