Because I Love You
High School
A time of finding yourself and finding friends
Becoming someone your younger self could be proud of
Someone that you’ll tell your children about
Hearing teachers tell you the best advice you’ll ever hear
Yet what teachers don’t tell you
Is that high school and the boys attending
Break your heart
Because of the crushes you’ll have
The boys that don’t like you back
And boys that like you for what you’re not
They like you for your looks, and not your insides
They like you for a selfie you posted
They’d rather have a short conversation than an intellectual one
Not even one about how strong your faith in God is,
or if you love your parents
They don’t want someone who loves the important things
But rather the unimportant things
Unimportant things such as wondering if you’ve had your first beer
If you’ve ever kissed someone
Or if you’d ever want to hang out
High School boys were made to teach you a lesson
They have no sincerity and are hormone driven
They lead you on, and feel no remorse
When breaking up with you, they tell you that you deserve better
And you think to yourself yes I do
A highschool boy becoming infatuated with you is not love
Love is not falling for the feeling of someone
Love is finding someone who loves you from head to toe
Someone loving how your nose looks when you laugh
How your eyes look staring into theirs
And is not just falling for how someone looks
Instead of boys saying you deserve better
They should say you deserve someone who will love you for what you are
After heartache,
You think, will I ever find the one? You feel hopeless
Yet you move on, and then again and again
You realize what you deserve is better than what you get
You realize what you deserve
Is someone to be sincere in their thoughts and actions
Someone who will choose water over beer
Someone who will love every flaw
Who will pray for and with you every day
Someone who will go through hell and back for you
And when you ask them why
They say because I love you
