Because I Love You

Stars don’t twinkle as bright as they did when I longed for their warmth
Mountain peaks are tangible; Thoughts of you can calm the storm
Ocean depths aren’t deep at all in comparison to our talks
If I had one chance to hold a hand I’d clasp the hands of clocks
For time to stand and us to sit, forever remaining still
I loved you then, I love you now, I know I always will.

It’s odd to consider that once I believed one’s words likened truth
Consumed with uncertainty and hope, I gave my core in youth
I trusted words, deceptions aplenty, dreams that fell in tears
You found your joy in bottomless pits disguising themselves as beers
I realized then I couldn’t complete; a bouquet to a bud
For in times of decision, always spirits over blood

Celebrations a permanent reminder of faith as just a chore
Overlooking every effort, waiting for the door
A call, a card, a letter, a song, something just from you
One hand could save the smiles you gave, ‘twas only but a few
I longed for you to tuck me in, to kiss me on my head
To fall asleep, beneath your cheek, praying me off to bed

Who’d think that I would have to, first, be laying you to sleep?
That it’d be me praying for you as you rest beneath my cheek
That tears would fall and dreams you’d catch for once and for all
That finally, after all these years, I’d actually get a call
These conversations remind me of youth; still you don’t reply
But now you’re here at least. That’s fine, despite the reason why.

I’m pleased with us. It took a while. Frequent stirring of the pot.
See you again sometime next week when I come to visit your plot.

Because I love you.
Daddy.
