Because I Love You

You broke me down,

Ruined all that I had.

Took away every ounce of happiness I ever felt.

Showed me evil things that I never knew this world could offer.

You showed me an untrue representation of what love is.

I thought you loved me,

What happened to that?

I was not allowed to be myself.

To enjoy things that I like just because you didn’t.

You made me feel that my opinions did not matter.

You controlled me to a point where I was a prisoner in my own body.

But I stayed, because I love you.

Time goes on.

I still think of you everyday,

But I can’t help but thank you.

Thank you for showing me what love isn’t.

You did not love me that way I loved you.

Someone who loved me would not have treated me

The way you treated me.

Because I loved you,

I learned to love myself.

Because of the way you controlled me

I learned to see how much I was missing out on in this world.

Thank you for the good times we used to have,

And thank you for showing me what I need to look for in my next love.

The next person will not be like you.

He will be charming, and forgiving

And everything a relationship should have.

Because I love you,

I love and appreciate myself more.

And you can not hurt me anymore.
