Because I Love You

We've been told by people throughout the years that everything they do is

'because I love you.'

They let us fall down, broken arms and scraped knees because we had to learn somehow.

When they have to hurt us or let us be hurt for our own good, 'because I love you.'

We could never understand the depth of those words at a young age, when things were still new and unfamiliar.

With every day being a constant game of "What Next?" we didn't have time to put thought into the concept of "Because I Love You."

The phrase is used less as an admonishment as the years flick by, but still whispers at the edge of potentially dangerous situations.

The girl who is left crying alone on the sidewalk, her first love walking away without a second thought other than their reason for leaving:

'Because I Love You.'

The boy who is looked down upon and forced to try and live up to unachievable standards set by his unfeeling father.

'Because I Love You.'

The old man who pours out all his medications, his beloved wife's last breath solidly fixed in his mind as he prepares to join her

'Because I Love You.'

The baby who is abandoned, dropped off sleeping on a snowy doorstep of an orphanage under the mask of darkness

By a mother who is weeping, but determined in her resole to abandon her only child

'Because I Love You.'

We all know that the greatest harm can come from the best intentions, that sometimes the thread pulls too hard

The whole world comes unraveled around us and there's nothing we can do about it except sit back and let it smack us in the face

However, while we're sitting in the rubble and decay of our own ruin, there are people who are willing to help

To listen, to discuss, to be there when you're crying your eyes out at two in the morning

They pick us up from the dust and grime, lead us by the hand throught the darkness of our destroyed psyche

They stay quiet and wipe the tears and pain from our faces with a washcloth, patiently starting a task that will take a lifetime to complete

We are so warped and distorted within our own minds that their kindness *does not compute*.

We cannot comprehend why someone would go to so much trouble to save us.

They just smile and say the only words that can link the extremes of indescribable victory and glorious failure

'Because I Love You.''
