Because I Love You

Because I Love You

I wake up and wipe my morning eye goo

It’s 6 am, and I’ve barely slept

A million projects to do, all night I wept

But for all you’ve done, it’s the least I can do

Sleepless nights, because I Love You

You clean the upper class’s houses, scrubbing your floor on your knees

So I can sit in class and earn my degrees

Back home, you were not able to attend middle school

You wanted more, so you hopped on the mule

As long as I prosper, you said, it was worth the hassle

So from right to left, I will move that tassel

My red Jansport weighs a ton

I’m late to class, so now I run

My hand cramps up as I jot notes down
I stand out in class. No one else is brown

But I don’t mind the corner-eyes stares

It just goes to prove how much I care

I’ll wear the green shirt and ridiculous hat

I’ll even put up with the man who picks at

The little brown girl, waiting his table

Oh, how I hate to be given a label

But his smugness won’t faze me

I’ll serve him his coffee. Gracefully.

Friday I’ll get paid, and the check will come in

It’s all worth it when I see that huge grin

It’s the least I can do to reward all your struggle

For across that border you had to be smuggled

You followed your heart and pursued your vision

Even if it meant your family’s division

I owe my life to you. My friends. My chances. My education.

You gave it to me, by moving to this nation.

You chose my life over yours and blessed me with chances

I can achieve it all now, considering the circumstances

So every day I’ll wake up as the morning birds coo

It’s the least I can do because I Love You
