Because I Love You

There was a little love lost.
A little here, a little there.
It was poisonous, filling our lungs like smoke,
more than one should be able to bare.

But we became addicted,
and soon it all ran out.
While I was still siphoning from what I felt we had,
you went to look for it in others.

The intoxication of it left me blind,
content with being smothered, but once again,
it was only you that I sought to fuel my mind.
This break was something I could never mend.

While you filled your lungs with another's breath,
I was left defending our poison, saving what was left.
I begged, I pleaded. I was an addict jonesing for another fix.

All the while, you were stealing love from another's lips.
I tried, I cried, but nothing could save me from the reality in your eyes.
Your heart had become someone else's, you no longer needed mine.

I thought back on our conversations, looking for a sign.
But you bled my love dry,
you thought there was nothing left to salvage.
You found another drug that gave you the impression that you could fly.

The night you decided to sever your ties,
your words continued to spin the web of lies.
You told me you had to let me go because you loved me.
What wasn't expected was my silent support.

Why?
That is what he asked me.
Why?
This is what I still ask myself.

I suppose my memories haunt me, but your happiness has clearly grew.
Why have I helped you? Well, because I love you.
