Because I Love You
I’ll guard your heart with all I have.
No one is allowed to break it.
Although, before I got to hold it, someone did.
I try to pick up the pieces
hoping I can be enough.
You tell me you’re okay
but I can see how you struggle
everyday to mend yourself
to make yourself whole again.
It’s like I see you drowning in the ocean
under the weight of all your hurt
but I am stuck on the shore
because I can’t swim.
Yet, I’ll jump into the water for you
even if I get dragged under.
Showing you that you’re loved is worth that risk.
You may not be able to show me love right now.
That’s okay. Don’t rush it.
Your heart is precious to me.
Time will help you mend it.
But until that time passes, I will love you with all that I have in me.
I will wipe away your tears.
Cradle you when you’re sad.
Carry you when you can’t stand.
I’ll hold your hand.
I’ll hug you tight and hold you close.
I’m never letting go;
You mean too much to me.
One day, someone will love you more than I do.
And he will be lucky indeed.
I’ll hand you over, fully mended, with no pieces left to put back.
Although, he’ll also have a piece of me,
a piece that I gave up.
Because, as your best friend, I gave you a piece of my heart
that you needed to fix yours.
I don’t notice the missing part.
It doesn’t hurt.
I gave it to someone who needed it much more than I.
And that is what love is:
Giving every part of yourself to someone else
not expecting anything in return.
I’ll never as for that part of me back;
I’m truly glad you have it.
Now you can go on loving and living.
I know you love me more than you can express
because I made that sacrifice for you.
To me, that is enough.
I would sacrifice everything that I have, everything that I am for you.
And now that you know how, I’m sure you’d do the same.
But do you know why I'd do it?
Because I love you.
