Because I only love you
Because I love you I’d watched you perform on stage.
I’d wait in long lines while I slowly aged.
To watch you pretend that you were on trial,
I would postpone seeing my friends for a while.
There you stood magnificent and grand,
what a good act! Everyone give her a hand.
Because I love you I did all that you said,
I'd come over when you wanted, knowing where it led-
You arguing that I should be around you more,
While you knew that my family is in midst of a war.
Though you had a point, I should care about our time,
Even when doing so makes my love for you a crime.
Because I love you I kept your secrets intact.
I’d see you buy bags in an alley around the back.
I said nothing, for it was not my concern,
at least that's what you said and that I'd soon learn
Because I love you I'd help stick that needle in your arm,
I'd tell you it's bad, and I wanted you away from harm.
"I'll be fine! Just do it" you'd say,
I stuck the needle in your arm as I looked away.
Because I love you I’d let you see other men,
I’d do anything as long as it made you happy again.
"You know I still love you, baby it true!
He's just a sideman, I promise it's through."
Because I love you I tried to understand,
time went on, and track season began.
I looked into the crowd to find my other heart,
And you weren't there doing your part.
I began to feel rage for I was mad,
but that anger went away, and I soon turned sad...
Because I love you.
No this couldn't be love, at least not from you,
Love doesn't involve just one person, you need two.
I always thought love would justify the means,
Like my mom making me eat all the green beans.
This was not that, how could this be?
You weren't ever there, especially for me.
Love is being there when you can,
Love is being their number one fan.
Love is going the extra mile,
Love is making them always smile.
But not when you lose family and friends
or having to hold that needle in your hands.
Love is supposed to be double-sided,
Love is together not divided.
