Because I Said So

Your words are like a roofie.

You hand me a glass of sweet lemonade

With a smile that makes me feel beautiful.

Your arms wrap around me

Like a warm blanket,

Protecting me from the bitter cold, you say.

You whisper you need to give me some advice,

But as you begin to talk,

The room begins to spin and

I no longer know up from down.

You’re fat.

The outfit on you?  It makes you look like a slut.

Your makeup makes you like a cheap prostitute.

Those heels?  Are hooker heels.

Your perfume makes everyone want to gag.

I stumble as I try to find my balance,

Everything blurs as if I am on a carousel going too fast.

And as I try to pull away,

Your arms turn into a straight jacket.

Enough, you demand.

I am only telling you this because I love you,

Because I want you to know how others see you.

Don't worry though,

We can fix you- turn you into someone that

is actually beautiful and people will like.

Your words entrap me.

You love me.

You are ugly.

You love me.

Your laugh is too loud.

You love me.

Your crying makes you weak.

You love me.

You are lonely? Am I nothing?

You love me.

Just shut up.

You love me?

You tell me a small spark,

A speck of light.

You say just let me help you grow into something more powerful and bright,

Let me turn you into the raging fire you could be.

But I am not growing.

I am only being smothered.

It is you who is is growing.

You are not the beautiful fire that I once thought you were.

You are not the passionate person that has fire in their eyes.

You are a wildfire.

You burn out of control,

Consuming everything in your path to make yourself bigger,

Brighter,

More powerful.

You do not have fires in your eyes,

You have fire in yours hands.

Your touch leaves me burns that never seem to quite heal.

I try and put you out,

To stop this burning.

But when I stop,

All I can hear is your deafening roar and nothing else.

When I drop,

Your smoke charrs my lungs,

Leaving them filled with soot.

And as I try and roll away,

You seem to just keep following.

You love me you say.

You are this because you love me.

Why do you think I put so much time into you?

You ask as if I am stupid,

Naive.

And maybe I am,

Maybe I should have noticed the first time you

Slipped roofie into my drink and

My whole world started to spin.

Or maybe I noticed the first time you said

Because I said so,

Instead of because I love you.

But after all,

Doesn't a lover know best?
