Behind the Curtain
Do you see me? Of course you don’t.
The people who do are few
And people rarely recognize
All the things that I do
I stand behind the curtain
Support in a quiet way
Encourage with a smile
Or a kind thing to say
I pick up the slack left to me
And do the work of two
I do the work without complaint
I do the work for you
Do you need to be alone?
I understand completely
But understand this right now
I’ll check on you discreetly
You have a question or problem?
You can always come to me
You can talk to me night or day
I won’t charge a fee
Are you too busy to visit me?
No time for your old pal?
I’ll change my own schedule
Even when you won’t, I shall
On the first day in the classroom
Everyone is new
But I’ll introduce myself first
If that’s better for you
You seem to be far too tired
Are you doing okay?
Feel free to open up and speak
Here your secrets will stay
In this story we call life
I’m rarely center stage
I’m thought of as simply nice
Until you read the last page
Only then do people see me
Seen behind the curtain
I might not have been the hero
But I’m the friend, that’s certain
