Behind the Screen
For some books, their covers are empty,
Unmarked, blank as eyeballs of dead
But as you flip the pages scrutinize sentences
You realize how complex, how advanced,
The words are that you have read
For others they bring such radiant images,
Intentionally pleasing to the eyes, like bees on flower, or wasp on bud
But the words inside, so lousily, lifeless, sluggish
Without substance or meaning, just lingering like pearls cast in mud.
Well am neither
Just like the screens of television
Your reflection shine so bright when you look at me,
Positivity, resilience, talent, hard work, that’s what you see
Twenty year old epileptic scholar that is just who I am,
But a doctor, that is what I want to be
Syncope, convulsions,
Hospitalizations, powerful medications
It is never easy living with an illness that is shrugged under the carpet
Like tiny dirt particles, even though it exists and cannot be ignored
I am the girl who girl who fight like hell rooster to thrive,
To push myself like power house giving myself the drive
I am that girl who finds that extra gust of positivity once I am alive
Who know how to fight beyond my faint, fears easy and just saying
I will survive
Unpredictable…I turn my volume up, change channels,
My illness restricts but does not define me
It has mold me to be tough powerful and strong,
To have fun and be more appreciative of the things I had all along,
School, friends, family, support and a place where I belong.
