BEHIND THE VEIL

For so long, I wore a veil over my face

So disconnect from the world, but that was my way

I felt safe

Behind the veil

A girl so fragile

So insecure and without a voice

A growing rage

But never too late

Years after, I pushed myself for the imaginable

I lifted the veil off my face

I’ve never seen the world so crisp and clear

No boundaries, just free floating

I spent time practicing in life

I waxed my eyebrows for the first time but I ripped one off

I cooked my first rice and it burned

I dealt with my first heartbreak

These experiences molded me into me

Now comfortable in my skin, my Latina skin

My little voice shouted from a distance

I’m here, I’m HERE!

I grasped it tight and voiced my own opinions and beliefs

My journey has been a jigsaw puzzle

Back and forth but one piece closer to the finished portrait

But never too late
