Beneath the Surface

How can people look like they have it all together on the outside but be going through hell? Everyone knows there are things that lie deeper than the surface Hiding behind smiles and laughter and beautiful faces Everyone has a story, a battle, a scar Many people deal with so much But when do we take the time to step into their shoes? Paul walks everyday invisible through the halls People walk right by he blends in like part of the walls Only noticed when teased or harassed Pain surrounds him, hope can’t be grasped With gun in hand, he falls to the floor He pulls the trigger and flies back against the door There are things that lie deeper than the surface Emma tries to erase the memories that haunt her mind But no peace does she ever find She tries drinking and drugs to drown away her pain Darkness just surrounds, her attempts are in vain Her parents constantly fight at home People surround, but why does she feel she utterly alone Hiding behind a smile, although she feels her world is collapsing Screaming for love and acceptance is it to much to be asking? There are things that lie deeper than the surface Fear overtakes him as he lays with his blue eyes open 5 years old, but his life has been broken Horror filled scenes of past abuse haunt his mind Yet little compassion from others does he find From foster home to foster home he has been thrown He trust no one depending on himself alone No one understands the pain he had to bare In fact he feels like no one cares There are things that lie deeper than the surface 17 year old Michele was driving with her brother in the back She ran a red light and hit a car SMACK Her brother’s life ended that very day Now she lives with guilt that won’t go away She’s crying out is forgiveness possible to find? There are things that lie deeper than the surface Jake’s wrist are slashed etched with pain Hurting inside, he feels there’s nothing left to gain Hate overwhelms him, he feels like no one cares The load he’s been given he cannot bear He takes a knife to cut away the hurt building inside There are things that lie deeper than the surface Lily sits in a hospital room Head buried in her hands Cancer is her doom Her husband holds her Not knowing what to say How can this be? Why do things have to be this way? There are things that lie deeper than the surface Can you hear the sounds of a dead generation? Pain, anger, hate, loneliness, and abuse feel this nation Rape, murder, and disease run wild We cry save the trees But don’t care about an aborted child Desensitized by the culture and media around Instead of raising our voices we don’t make a sound! Blending into our perfectly narcissistic culture! It’s time for a G-E-N-E-R-A-T-I-O-N to arise Break the silence defeat the lies There is hope that shatters the night A loved one survives not giving up the fight Peace is found through divine collision Dreams resurrected through a newfound vision Will we answer the call? Will we choose to reach out or do nothing at all? Caught up in a world that is all about us Will we take the time to love or put up a fuss? A world is hurting in need of hope Will we stand or leave them drowning to cope? We have a choice to make everyday? Will we take the time to care or just walk away?
