The Best Friend Me

You ask me what I need

If I were completely alone;

I would want someone else

There with me. I would want

To share the beauty of it all

The pain, the fear, the adrenaline

To stand there by my side

And tell me it’ll be okay.

But that’s my biggest problem

I need someone else to reassure

Me that it’ll be just fine.

That’s not what I need.

I need someone who knows,

I need my best friend named Me.

                        ***

Sometimes she is gone, the one

We call Me. Sometimes she is out

And about, off in a different world.

I admire her, I admire her freedom

She doesn’t need to be there when

The island becomes lonely.

She’s only there for the serenity.

She leaves when it’s cloudy.

She doesn’t know how to comprehend

The fact that sometimes others

Need you. Sometimes Me can’t be

Your best friend because your real

Best friends need you. Sometimes they

Need this girl named Me.
