Best friends. Friends. Strangers

Having a best friend can be a great feeling

You plan your whole lives together.

You develop a love for that person who you expect to do everything with.

You become willing to do anything to make sure that they’re safe.

And they do the same for you.

But only for a while.

You begin to realize that you are putting forth way more effort than they are.

It’s not fair to you.

But right now this friendship is the only thing that makes you happy

So whenever they do something wrong

You excuse them, because you love them

Then they begin to hurt you

Taking advantage of your friendship

Using you.

You continue to let them walk all over you

As if you are the red carpet and they are the model

You eventually become a second option for them

A backup

Used only at their convenience.

You will soon begin to realize that you are more than this

You aren’t the carpet, You’re the whole damn show.

Your chest will begin to pound

And you will finally give up

Give up on trying to keep something that isn’t good for you

You silently drift away from your best friend

I mean friend.

I mean stranger.

There will be nights you lie in your bed contemplating for hours whether you should call or text them.

You might even shed a few tears.

You’ll reminisce on all the good times you had with them. While managing to block out the bad ones

Time will pass

You haven’t talked for months.

You go from missing them every day,

To having only occasional thoughts of them.

Then on a day you least expect

They will text you

Explaining how much they miss you and how much they need you back in their life.

But you are strong now

You glare down at your phone

See the text

And delete it.

A slight smile will appear on your face

You are beginning to realize just because you loved them

Doesn’t mean they can hurt you.
