The Best Thing

When I first met you I was filled with hatred and disgust I was angry for having to move two worlds over This was the best thing that had happened to me. I was fourteen and had an attitude bigger than the continents combined You were patient and kind Strict yet understanding and even fun at times I was grounded a lot, a troublemaker, yet learned This was the best thing that had happened to me. I moved to Colorado All out on my own for a grown up decision You understood and gave me encouragement throughout the entire ideal You had my back when life became tough This was the best thing that had happened to me. Fast forward and I’m twenty-four Experiencing difficulties within myself and struggling to choose Between two parts of myself: men or women Placed a phone call to Salt Lake City, conversation over two hours long I came out to you and confessed, fearful of your reaction and being disowned You were patient and kind; logical but understanding Told me “You’re my daughter; I’ll love you no matter what…” This meant the world to me I never thought you would have my back yet again when life was rough You’ve been there all along, even before I met you. You saved me at twelve. You’re my Dad, my father, Fajah. And you’re the best thing that has happened to me.
