In Between Stations on the Subway
I am in between stations on the subway,
______At no particular time of night.
Some of the people are facing forward,
______As if they are waiting for something to happen
____________Or they are afraid they will miss their stop.
Some of the people are facing backward
______Watching the ribbons of light
____________Trail off into the vanishing point
__________________Of an endless tunnel.
I am facing the double doors.
______My eyes dart, back and forth, trying to catch the passing lights.
____________But it’s just a passing frame,
__________________And all the photographs come back blurry.
The disheveled man next to me
______Is singing to himself, in arbitrary meter,
____________“Sandman, Sandman, King of sleep,
__________________Drowsy days and slumber deep,”
We’re only just between stations—
Einstein is checking his watch,
______And Newton is chasing his dropped water bottle
____________Back and forth.
__________________Plato is adjusting his glasses,
________________________Reading the hieroglyphics on the map.
The whir of a moment flying by—
And Father Time is dozing off in the back.
______“Through the window, in you creep,
____________Down you sweep without a peep,”
Sandman, please put me to sleep...
