A Big Promise

Hey, how are you today, how is your life?

You know if you ever need anything,

I am here for you no matter the strife.

This is a big promise, one that should sting

Your eyes and your throat from the empathy.

But these words are being tossed around

And often used instead as weaponry.

The predators wield them to clamp down

On relationships to maintain the power

While their “true love” is forced to cower.

But take heart, good relationships still stand.

Spouse or friends won’t say because I love you

That you must do this for me offhand.

No, they say I will be there where you’re blue

I’ll comfort and protect you and lend an ear,

Bring a glass of water to soothe your throat

Or spring a surprise dinner to endear.

They’ll be the life vest to keep you afloat

And if not, they’re willing to drown with you

Because together you’ll always pull through.

And on the quiet nights, the sound a breath,

Will their thoughts wander to whom they love most.

They shall birth a message that’ll remain in death

For it’ll never reach the warm tongue to toast.

Instead, in the mind, will it always lie:

But in their actions, it will be implied,

And even the smallest greeting will bring
