The Bird

A bird sits in a cage waiting to be set free.

People come from miles around just to see.

She always sits, makes no sound, as people watch.

One day a boy came to her, he came to see.

He promised her one day he’d come and set her free.

He came day by day, stayed with her, and he’d talk.

He told her of places far away she’d love to be.

And then he asked her pretty girl why won’t you sing?

With no one else around she finally sang for him.

He came back every day just to hear her song.

He would sit beside her cage and till everyone was gone.

He’d stay late each night till the lights grew dim.

One day he came to see her and said very soon.

Soon now I will come to your cage and free you.

So the little bird full of joy awaited his return.

Day by day passed, promise ringing in her ears

But the pretty bird waited for years and years

He never really knew what he wanted she learned.

Five years later in walked a man, once a boy.

The same one who had come and stolen her joy

He came to her cage and asked her pretty girl would sing?

The little bird looked into his big green eyes

These were the same ones which had told her lies.

About all of the wonderful places they could be.

Sadly she sang for him, soft and sweet.

About the promise which he did not keep

And all the things she wished he could have been

The man had been that boy who stole her song

For that’s all he had really wanted all along

And with that he smiled and never returned again.

A bird sits in a cage waiting to be set free.

People come from miles around just to see.

She always sits, makes no sound, as people watch.
