Birds
I envy the birds who sing in the trees
Living life in the open, not muffling their chirps behind doors with hidden keys
Yes I am jealous of these avian creatures
Brave and proud to show off their features
And when the spring comes through
And when summer and fall go by, winter comes anew
The frost reaches out with its taloned claw
Casting a shadow, a darkness of the mind, draining and raw
And as I lay unmoving, unfeeling, and unknowing in bed,
The chains of doubt and despair clanking noisily around heart and head,
I glance at the barren limbs of the trees
Lifeless, grey, and cold, merely twitching in the icy breeze
Barren of color, vibrance, and life
Stabbed in the back by Time’s cruel knife
And as I stare upon this sight
I feel my spirit leave my body and enter into a ghostly flight
And as I pass through the gray skies I see a V formation
An armada of birds, flying south with elation
For to have wings means for one to know
There is always a brighter place to go
Yes, I envy these birds in the sky
Always knowing the embrace of the sun to the day they die
Just being able to flap their wings away
And fly off into the horizon, to a warmer day.
