Birdsong

A cat lies in the grass

basking in the beams of fading sunlight

she hears a cheery call from a tree top

and stirs from her lounging to see

a cardinal with a melody for the world

proud in his bright crimson coat

he sings without fear of the cat or winter

which has begun to fade into spring

for he is safe from the reach of both
