A Bittersweet End

As a child, I often dreamed of this day.

Though then it seemed just too far away.

I imagined my freedom - no parents by my side.

Back then I thought that I’d

Be ready for this.

Now the time has come.

I’ve graduated. I’m done!

But to my surprise

There are tears welling up in my eyes

As I think of the things I would miss.

No more having my mom wake me up for school

Or seeing my little sister make her hair look “cool.”

No longer will I play basketball on the same team

As my sister, though she made me want to scream,

I’d miss the time together we would spend.

Then I thought of the new friends I’d make

And the dreams I will awake.

I smile through the tears

And shake away any fears

For this is a bittersweet end.
