Black Face Babies

D.C.
Just north of Northwest
It's faces was once predominantly colored when I was about nine. Now it's faces are as white as mine

Dad said its for the better,
Never really paid attention tho,
Cause I grew up with things of gold and leather,
So I thought these things wouldn't matter

All the kids in my class look like me,
Except the little girl in row 3,
My mom says she's no different than the boy in row 1 or he girl in row 2,
But dad said he's nothing that she could never compare to me

Usually I just stay in the middle and pay it no mind,
But now I'm starting to realize it's not all rainbows and sunshine.

The people around me all have different opinions.
Most say I don't know what her people have been facing since the beginning.

What people don't know about the little girls mother,
Is that she's no different that any other.
Poor like the girl in row 4,
But she teaches her daughter to strive for the best..even when they try to stop her to aim for more.

Once I saw this woman,
With skin as white as mine.
Only thing is,
It was blinded by a mask,
A mask with a black face.

It wasn't until then I realized the level of disrespect.
The fact that the mask with the black face, mocked and made fun of those of the African American race.

I refuse to disrespect the little girl in row 3,
For she is no different than me.

What's crazy is how many white people can make Black Faces Babies

KIERRAAVENT

I am a senior at Benjamin Banneker Academic High school and I attend to go into college studying African American Studies in order to move on to a masters in that same major. With this degree in Afro-American studies I will further educate those around me, while creating programs that aid in defying the norms put in place for people of color.
