Black Heels

Black heels strut loudly down the hallway

Making the message clear to everyone

Stay away

But despite this very loud and very intimidating warning I decide to sum up my courage and say something, anything.

One word

Escapes my lips before I can even begin to stop it, filling me with what I would later call regret but then called bravery.

Hey

Her eyes riveted onto my mine while her head never moved

But her legs do.

Before my face had turned all the way red she walked away

turning all the heads

AND I JUST stood there…

I...couldn’t believe her

Didn’t she know the endless amounts of courage it took

Didn’t she know that I practiced for days before that

DIDN’T SHE KNOW that I looked in the mirror every morning saying it over and over again

All the while despising every zit and mark I saw on my face!

Hey

NO! That wasn’t perfect! It didn’t look right! Why do my teeth look so crooked? And why does my hair look so stupid?

All of this I went through for her

All of this I had to endure

AND YET SOMEHOW SHE HAD THE AUDACITY TO KEEP WALKING

I know she heard me, there’s no way she didn’t

She looked me right in the eyes BUT wouldn’t show it.

As if she was saying

Sure I’d love to talk with you as long as it wouldn’t endanger the way PEOPLE THINK OF ME.

And so I stand there, RAGE BUILDING  WITH EACH TORTUOUS THOUGHT but mean while totally not

noticing the girl across the hall

who’s been staring this whole time just waiting for me to look at her…

And yet I haven't, because I’m too obsessed with some self obsessed girl who cares more about peoples opinions and would rather be a spoke on the wheel!

AND YET I stand there, judging her for bending to society’s will while I’m still angry, because I can’t have her

And so I ask you, who’s really wearing the heels?
