Black History

Black was the ship that brought them stacked. Black was the whip that slashed their back.
Black was the floor that became their bed.
Black were the feet adjacent to their head.

Black was the night they decided to flee.
Black was the tunnel that led them free.
Black were the shackles that returned them "home." Black was the hate that kept them alone.

Black was the bomb that hit 16th Street.
Black was the smoke that covered their seats.
Black were the little girls that were chosen to die.
Black were the streets that sent prayers up high.

"Black" was the word that separated man. Black was the color that meant "less than."
Black was the man that had a dream.
Black was the crowd that made equality stream.

Black was the bullet that killed the King.
Black was the pen that wrote "let freedom ring." Black is the past that holds many mistakes.
Black is the President of the United States.
