Black Woman Determined

I am not the definition of beauty

I am not secure with myself

I am not strong enought to go on

But I am not this person anymore

I am my own definition of beauty

Not just beauty, but intelligence too

I can give you makeup advice and recite the quadratic formula

I never knew beauty was could be on the inside

But reflected off of you like a beam of light

As a black woman in America,

I was not taught to love my skin

My curly hair hidden by hot combs and trying to bleach my skin never really worked

I wish I had someone to teach me

That curly hair is amazing and black skin looks incredible when the sun hits it just right

So if you looked me up in the dictionary

I'd be under determined

Determined to not be a stereotype

Determined to be a role model to young black girls that don't know the beauty and intelligence they possess

I am truly happy with me

I am excited to get my voice out into the world

I am a Black Woman Determined.
