Blessed

Blessed

A soft, easy touch,

The gentle squeeze of your hands,

Opens my lungs for breath

And opens my eyes, though I see nothing

The chaos within

Is a loud, thoughtless hum,

But a single voice

Above the noise

Anchors me to sanity:

An oasis in a carousel of agony

“Do not give up on the world

Just because it seems

Like the world has given up on you.

Do not hide your heart and golden self

For fear of hurting yourself and others.

Do not stop fighting

Just because life is a hard opponent

And strikes you until you are dazed.

“Life fights dirty:

Nobody is as tough and mean as life,

Nobody else will kick you as you cower,

Nobody gives you so much Hell.

“Yes, there will be pain.

Yes, there will be sorrow.

Yes, it will be daunting.

Yes, it will be hard.

But none of that matters.

“In the end,

It doesn’t matter the trials you faced,

It doesn’t matter the pain you endured,

It doesn’t matter the times you fell,

It doesn’t matter how much life hit,

It doesn’t matter how much even you hit.

“In the end,

It only matters

That you finished that fight

With your bravest face:

That you held on,

No matter how weary you were;

That you were thrust into the fire,

And rose from the ashes.

“Now let me tell you,

You can’t cheat in this fight.

There’s more honor in fighting in teams

Than getting pushed around.

Broken bones and souls need crutches.

The weary need a refuge.

The hurt need the caring hands of nurses.

“Lean on me when you can’t stand.

I’ll be strong when you are weak,

I’ll hold on when you let go,

I’ll wipe away your tears,

I’ll cradle your head when you rest,

I will bear your joys and sorrows

‘Til we’ve seen this battle through.

“No matter how hard you need to fight,

Remember that you’ll always have me.

When the shadow passes, my weary warrior,

You will be rewarded with peace and sleep

Of the purest kind.

In the People you’ll find honor

And in my arms will be waiting

A warm welcome for my hero.

For true courage and strength is measured

By the heart.

“So do not give up,

When you’ve got people fighting for you.

Fight for you.

Fight for me.

Fight for them.

Fight for us.

Fight for the life you once had,

And the life you will have.”

The warm embrace thawed my cold heart.

The words of wisdom cleared my mind.

I took a breath of life

And dared to open my eyes again.

The world comes into focus

Black turns to color

I see the face of my guardian angel

I don’t regret and won’t forget

The trials I faced,

The pain I endured,

The roads I traveled,

The joys I shared,

The sorrows I bore,

And lessons I learned

Because your heart and words,

My salvation,

Inspired me

To stand up,

Fight,

And live
