Bound Up in Leather Like the Books

Bound up in leather, like the books

And held by paper chains

A heart no longer functioning

Inside, no soul remains

They put a hat upon her head, pulled low

To hide the brand

And to disguise the trembling

Put a scroll into her hand

The eyes that sparkled once with interest

Now are pools of black

Filled with memories of facts and time

She can’t get back

Now stability is sure

Her worries are at rest

But--

To dream again,

To feel, to fly

She’d trade all her success
