The Boy and The Wolf
Once upon a time
A long long time ago
I, the wolf, was hungry
I came from the hills of snow
‘Twas in the field I heard it:
A muted, beautiful bleating
The sound of a flock of sheep
A flock I’d soon be eating
There was a boy there
Who would quickly raise the alarm
If he thought this herd of sheep
Was to come to any harm
I knew I had to be quick
I knew I had to be cunning
I knew that I was hungry
I began to start running
I came to the edge of the woods
And gave out a little growl
The boy, then, he turned
And then he began to howl
“There’s a wolf here for our sheep!”
The boy he loudly cried
“Come quickly men and hunt him
Come quick and get his hide!”
But I was quick and smart
I knew that the men would appear
I sank back into the woods
Where no man would dare come near
There I sat and hid
As hunger gripped my form
Bu the thought of all those sheep
Kept my blood a’ running warm
I went down a second time
To the boy and his precious sheep
I couldn’t yet eat my fill
But closer I began to creep
I got right behind him
And let out a quiet growl
And then the boy he turned
And then he began to howl
“There’s a wolf here for our sheep!”
The boy he loudly cried
“Come quickly men and hunt him
Come quick and get his hide!”
The men they came a’ running
They came up a little slow
But again, they found nothing
To the boy’s fearful woe
But this time was different,
For the men, they seemed aggrieved
That this boy had seemingly lied
But they were all of them, deceived
The third time I crept
Out of the snowy trees
I looked into the boy’s big eyes
And everything seemed to freeze
My amber eyes stared up at his
And I gave a little growl
And then the boy he turned
And then he began to howl
“There’s a wolf here for our sheep!”
The boy he loudly cried
“Come quickly men and hunt him
Come quick and get his hide!”
But then, something different
No footsteps from below
No men seemed to be coming
On the road, no men did show
For they did not want to answer
The boy who cried a lie
The boy who cried out “wolf”
Was left forsaken to die
They had not believed him
When he had yelled the truth
For they could not find this wolf
That had so scared the youth
The hunger was unbearable
But I took some time to reflect
On this victory I had won
Even though the boy was correct
He had seen a wolf
He had seen me coming near
The men had left their “liar”
And they had left him with a sneer
That night I feasted well
I did not want for food
But now I must depart
And now I must now conclude
That I was quick and cunning
That the men, they were wrong
And that the boy who had cried “wolf”
He was right all along.
