The Boy of Many Hardships

Mon, 01/12/2015 - 23:15 -- efk123

A 17 year old child applying for college,

built for success, wisdom, and knowledge.

A plethora of information has been deposited into him,

But due to his black skin many have trained him on a whim.

He's defied many odds and ends,

No matter the cost, he never bends.

This person is me, the child who writes this.

A child who yearns for knowledge and encourages bliss.

A teenager who's suffered many injuries.

Proved the doctors wrong with many victories.

I stand tall at 5 feet 10 inches.

But I still cringe at the fact that some of my ancestors were the victims to lynches.

I know that the last line may be scary.

But fear not, please don't be wary.

I don't ever want to forget where I came from.

Because if I do, I'm afraid of what I'll become.

I'm applying for this scholarship because I am very aware of what's at stake.

So I will pursue my goals, and celebrate by eating a large steak.

For those that are reading this

I'm just like you.

Started from the fetus,

Plenty of humor too.

Now it's time to roll,

The time is now,

Forget the poll,

And take a bow.

This poem is meant to express me, and me alone.

But how can I do such a thing without expressing a dark tone?

Truth is I'm a very kind teen.

So what's the point of being mean?

This poem is for those who are in my shoes.

Take a step forward, broadcast the news.

I hope you like this, because I put my soul into it.

And just so you know, none of the details here are irrelevant.
