A Boy She Doesn't Like

She puckers up

smacks her lips

smoothing out the lip gloss.

She runs her finger underneath

each eye

to clean up

the leftovers

from the make up she just applied.

She looks up

into the mirror

and meets her own gaze.

"Why are you doing this"

she asks aloud.

Getting dressed up

for a boy she doesn't like.

He'll kiss her,

she'll kiss back,

but she'll wonder why

she's playing along.

“Because

he's the only one

who pays attention”

she answers herself.
