Before The Boys
Before boys and crushes and love,
I had all my friends and ignorance and trust.
We'd whisper our secrets
And promise we'd keep it.
This was sacred,
And you may not like it,
But we chased it.
Before soft lips
And growing hips
And wanting to feel our first kiss,
It was bad nail polish and cheap perfume
And the best sleepovers
In the pinkest rooms.
Before batting eyes
And pretty lies
And cute, dumb guys,
I had just-girl tree forts
And awful, jean grandma shorts
And cutting my hair way too short.
Before boys,
I had girls.
Before his hand held mine,
I had a partner in crime.
Before he kissed me and swept me off my feet,
I had a best friend and she was all I'd ever need.
It wasn't just me.
She found a boy too,
Little did we know,
Both of us were just toys.
I miss her, not him, and our hair in the wind.
We went our separate ways and I regret that
To
This
Day.
Please take me back to when boys had cooties.
