Break Free
Glancing around, surrounded by people
Waiting for others to react.
My words float above their heads
In thin air.
Walking away feeling defeated and neglected
I start to drown in my thoughts
Negativity invades and seeps through every pore in my body
Soon I am a pile of darkness.
Days, even months, pass and no one seems to realize
That even though I'm outgoing,
Loneliness is clinging onto me,
Like a friend.
Even when I go out with friends
I don't seem to relate.
The world seems to be just outside of my grasp
And I am endlessly falling... alone.
Everyday, the walls cave in
Slowly taking the air out of my lungs.
Feeling trapped and alone and scared and confused,
I think "Why me?"
But one day, a guardian angel appears
Actually a student rushes over.
I look up confused yet excited,
Maybe, just maybe, someone finally noticed.
His dark brown eyes pierce straight into my soul.
I know he is someone who understands
Someone who relates
Someone who can... listen.
A few days later, walking with him to my house--we talk for hours
About my past
About life
And about my friend... loneliness.
After that day, I knew he truly understood the feeling
He truly understood me.
And the box that was slowly closing in on me, seemed to open just a little
Allowing me to breathe in fresh air.
Through many months, we got closer
Learning more about each other
Pouring our hearts out.
And every day, my little box opened a little wider.
And soon, in the summer, I broke free.
Loneliness left me.
The feeling was liberating and unexplainable
Like chains falling off my body, letting go of my wrists.
My world was finally still
I wasn't falling and I wasn't alone.
I felt in control,
And my heart was running towards the stars.
The part of me that was missing finally returned.
Loneliness took a piece of my heart
But that piece that left opened up my shell
Peeling away the cover.
I found a new me
A better me
Able to relate to others to a greater extent
And able to show vulnerability to those feeling alone.
Because of that boy with dark brown eyes, my guradian angel, my friend,
My world came back into my grasp.
My identity was back.
And, my friend loneliness left my body.
This newfound liberation allowed for a great change within my soul
My feelings stirred for I now have the desire to help others and lead others.
My actions changed for I now understand more people walking on the path with their friend called loneliness.
My aura changed for I now see the beauty in life and the beauty in struggles
For struggles reveal a newer you, a better you.
Now, I can say I broke free from the grasp of loneliness and fell into the hands of the world.
The world gave me a mouth to speak, eyes to see, ears to listen, and a body to move.
The world gave me these parts in order to lead others, empower others.
And I now know that.
Thanks to my guardian angel, my friend with dark brown eyes,
I see the world in a new light while leading others to that light.
I empower others daily for we are all struggling with something below the surface.
I care for others no matter who they are--despite their flaws or appearance--in order to help them break free.
And see the light at the end of the tunnel,
Like my friend with dark brown eyes did for me.
