Break up with me

I ask him to come and break up with

me face-to-face

like a captain visits the families of the dead

or a spider who wraps his prisoners

I say be a dog who pauses before he attacks

or a friend who stabs a friend in the front

I want him to look me in the eyes

when we’re alone in the park and

slowly give me his reasons why

But all he wants to do

is run home and text me “I’m sorry”

and expect me to be upset

He begins to torture me with memories

to find if i’m really “okay”

Once he finds that I am,

he decides to say he still “loves” me

Now it’s my turn to run
