Breaking the Cycle

Living in a world full of stereotypes

Pregnant at sixteen

Married to the man who couldn’t give you all

House full of children

This isn’t who we are

We begin to hide behind what they say

Not wanting to move forward

At eighteen mother had her first child

Stopping her from going to college

Sixth grade father left school

Had to find a way to help his family

Fifth grade my father turned his back

Walked out of my life

The pain doesn’t seem to ease

It’s still hard for me to breathe

But in my mind I knew it was the right thing

He messed up

Doesn’t know what he gave up

Mother had to do it on her own

Became the mom and the dad
Worked hard to make ends meet

Taking care of three children

And giving us what we needed

Clothes, shoes even the roof above our heads

She made me who I am today

You tell me I can’t do it

I tell you that I can

They told her she couldn’t do it

That she wouldn’t be able to make it

They said I wouldn’t do it

Wouldn’t make into college

I cried and I cried

Tears streaming down my face

I didn’t have the perfect grades

But now I’m the first to go to college

First to leave

Going to a four year university

I may be afraid

But it’s now my turn to make a change

Break away from what statistics say…
