Breaking The Cycle #BecauseILoveYou

She never needed anybody
Had her own mind
Her own body
She found it hard to find a light that shined as bright as hers
To get what she deserved
To find a man so unreserved that  he wasn't insecure every time she asserted her presence
He took her knowledge as a present and supported as she set the precedent
As the first woman president

He never needed anybody
You'd think gay was a tattoo adorned against his body
That's all they seemed to see
Not the athlete, the poet or the artistry
But the inner insecurities that screamed woe is me
An open window to his inner fears, being burned upon the cross as his gay lover wipes his tears
He hears
The demons at night as he dreams of a better life
One without hate, one where every flag can sway and under it he can relate
To not be afraid when standing up for the pledge of allegiance
To hold hands with his older brother, the one saluting under a country who doesn't love his homosexual kin
The one they say is living in sin
But unfortunately this is him

She never needed anybody
She stands over his rotten body
She didn't ask for this
And yet it still exists
Daughter of a crack mama
Been around the pipe since she was 15
Her mama was in the same boat, just another teen with a dream
Too caught up in the boys and the parties
Got pregnant by a dude named Marley, reminded her something of a bohemian song
She was wrong
Shordy was left with a baby, no pay rates, and an open case full of cocaine
She rubs her swollen belly to take away the pain of the kicks
It's real crazy what happened to Marley, dude got shot on 34th & 5th
And now she's standing over him singin this sad song
It won't help bring him back
Because unfortunately, he's gone

He never needed anybody
He came with his own plan
He always knew that being hard didn't make him a man
Made his own path
Set his own fate
He just wanted all the young brothers and sisters to relate
Walking across that graduation stage as his family congratulates
He's innate
That 1 percentage that made it, and trust that he won't take it for granted, his feet are planted
Like the seeds he soiled for his future to blossom
He's mr. Impossible
The unstoppable, man of the year
He wipes his sisters tears as she thanks god for his diploma
He's woke
Praising god as he spoke, standing up against that podium
He's glowing
All those people who never believed in him are now ghosts
Froze, as they watch him shed tears of joy
Forgetting the days when he used to be a broken record
Now he can honestly say that he never needed anybody
He had his own mind
His own body
Glorious days, not for long as he gets a call while still in the middle of that stage
His mama, Gloria has passed away
And just like that he's back to square one, forget these awards and this platform
This is heartbreak, his sister gasps as she watches him mourn
He's torn
Thought his mamas treatment was going good
Turns out that instead of going off to college he's stuck back in the hood, paying off all her bills, dumping out all her medicine pills
And still he tries to stay strong
Tryin not to be a replay of that sad bohemian song

Our generation never needed anybody
We stay out late tryna get that quick sensation
Keep forgetting that there is no erasing our mistakes
We're not awake yet we still keep screamin "woke"
Let that soak in
As you running around followin after her and him
Our light is lookin quite dim
We're always questionin
Yet we never respect the answer
Our children are dying of cancer, STD's, and too many bad memories
I am not a broken record
I am not a commodity
I am the inner conscious
The bullet in the gun
I am the sun
The earth
And his daughter
Little boys and girls runnin around without fathers
Mothers too busy searching for a replacement
I am encased, chafed, and put to shame because of my race
Black is not bad
Ebony is not a fad
Deepest hue, so dark it alludes to blue
Mother Nature was a goddess
I derive from a set of Queens, all covered in gold and blessed with curvaceous frames
Though we differ in origin
We are all the same
Our generation never needed anybody
We have our own minds
Our own bodies
Be happy with yours, smile
Appreciate everything that comes by, say hi even to the strangers
Stay away from the dangers of ignorance
Knowledge is the key, be everything that you set out to be
Listen, you may miss something from responding too quickly
But don't miss ya chance slow poke, act swiftly
Have respect for your elders, they  understand more than you think
Don't shrink against someone with more authority when all humans harbor the same amount of power
Shower everyday just like ya mama said

I read a quote one day that had my head spinning
It said some like “Its not about the people you’re losing, it’s about the love you’re winning”
Never settle for less, it all starts within you, how can you love someone else when you didn’t give any love to you too?
Forgive yourself to trust others, be honest, communicate with each other, whether it be your brother or your friend, don’t let her or him take away from how you value yourself
Don’t let them take away from how you’re down for yourself, self love is a matter of compassion, whether or not you take action, flight or fight against the repetition of history, let’s not repeat history, let’s make his story, matter of fact let’s make yours too
I am breaking the cycle #BecauseILoveYou
